10am–12pm: More photos from J.D. Parran!

J.D. returns to guide us through further images—this time from West Africa.

12pm–3pm: The Black Cosmic Music Library

Greetings from the Black Cosmic Music Library (BCML). It's still Black August, and Milford Graves's birthday.

For the early set we’ll hear:

  • The New York Art Quartet on WBAI-FM, 1965 (Amiri Baraka/LeRoi Jones–Milford Graves–John Tchicai–Roswell Rudd–Eddie Gomez)

  • The Milford Graves/Andrew Cyrille Percussion Ensemble at New York University, 1975 (Hugh Glover–Arthur Doyle–Raleigh Sahumba)

  • Unreleased music from the BaBi recording, at The WBAI Free Music Store, 1976 (Milford Graves–Hugh Glover–Arthur Doyle)

3pm–6:30pm: In the Lab

The cross-lingual mastery of percussionist Milford Graves (1941–2021) continues to inspire new audiences even five years after his passing. Starting in the early Sixties, he was the hub of several orbits of devoted followers: Listeners couldn’t get enough and sought him out at every show. His circle of collaborating musicians broadened constantly. Students in Queens followed hisYara martial arts practice. Further students studied with him at Bennington College. And ultimately a worldwide scientific community became fascinated with his study of heart rhythm, percussion rhythm, and composition.

Thursday’s evocation of Professor Graves, on the 85th anniversary of his birth, will be informed by commentary from individuals representing several of these sectors, and of course vital music and words from Graves’s playing and teaching.

8pm-10pm: Clifford Allen hosts…

… initial surveys from a grab-bag of 1980s performance recording treasures. May include one or more of the following: Yahya Majid, Frank Lowe, Denis Charles, William Parker, June Tyson.

10pm-Late: The Black Cosmic Music Library (Reprise)

Excerpts of a 1976 radio interview with Graves and Cyrille. Also, music from his appearances on records.
